Exchange unit or new injector: the real cost of the core charge

A diesel injector sold as an exchange unit is a reconditioned part sold in return for your old injector. To guarantee that return, the seller charges a core charge, or only ships the part once they have received yours. The price shown is therefore rarely the real cost. Here is how to make a fair comparison with a new injector with no core charge.

How does a reconditioned exchange work?

Depending on the seller, there are two options:

  1. With a core charge: you pay for the part + a core charge (for example €50 per injector with some sellers). The part ships straight away. You then send back your old injector, and the core charge is refunded after inspection.
  2. Without a core charge: you send your old injector first. The reconditioned part is only shipped once it has been received.

Either way, your old injector is part of the price.

The hidden costs of the core charge

  • Money paid up front: for 4 injectors, the core charge adds up for each part.
  • Returning the old part: removal, packing, shipping, and often return postage at your expense.
  • The wait: the refund only comes after the old injector has been received and inspected. With the “no core charge” option, it is your vehicle that stays off the road during the round trip.
  • The risk of rejection: with many sellers, if the old injector is deemed unsuitable for reconditioning (cracked body, seized, incomplete part), the core charge is not refunded. Always check the terms and conditions before ordering.

Price shown = final price Rarely Yes
Risk of core charge not refunded Yes, depending on the part's condition None
Quality Varies by reconditioner Consistent (original manufacturing)

Worked example: 4 x 1.6 TDI injectors (03L130277B)

At Injexo, a set of 4 new 03L130277B injectors costs €1,009.60, i.e. €252.40 per injector, delivery and duties included, with no core charge. To compare with an exchange-unit offer, add up:

  • the price of the 4 reconditioned parts;
  • 4 core charges paid up front;
  • outbound shipping and, where applicable, return shipping for your old injectors;
  • the risk of losing part of the core charges if a part is rejected.

The real price gap is often smaller than it looks, while the new part has no wear at all.

When a reconditioned exchange still makes sense

On a very old vehicle or one nearing the end of its life, a good-quality reconditioned injector, bench-tested and covered by a warranty, may be enough. What matters is knowing the total cost, including the core charge, and the refund conditions. Read more: New or reconditioned injector: which to choose?

Frequently asked questions

What is an injector core charge?

It is an amount paid on top of the price of an exchange part, refunded when the seller receives and accepts your old injector.

Is the core charge always refunded?

No. With many sellers, it is only refunded if the old injector is complete and can be reconditioned. Read the terms before ordering.

Is a new injector with no core charge much more expensive?

The unit price is higher, but once the core charge, return costs and risk of rejection are taken into account, the gap narrows considerably.

Do I need to send my old injector back to Injexo?

No. Our injectors are new and sold with no core charge: you keep your old part. View the new 03L130277B injector.
